What markets price long term (5y5y)

2.34%Sep 2026For information · not scored

Markets price 2.34% a year for 5 to 10 years ahead (in 2004–2019 it usually moved between 1.8% and 2.7%).

The average inflation bonds price for the period 5 to 10 years ahead (5y5y inflation compensation, monthly average). It includes risk and liquidity premia, so it is not a pure expectation.

Household inflation is above normal: CPI is up 3.7% over a year, pushed by energy (+20.4%). Underlying inflation is closer to 2% but still above it: core PCE is up 3.0% over a year (2.7% annualized over six months). The Dallas Fed trimmed-mean PCE gives a lower underlying reading: 2.19%.

Households expect more inflation than usual: 4.0% for the year ahead (Michigan, Aug 2026).

What would turn it red

  • CPI above 4.0% over a year. Today: 3.7%.
  • Core PCE above 3.5% over a year or 4.2% at a six-month pace. Today: 3.0% and 2.7%.
  • On the downside, core PCE below 0.5% over a year or −0.2% at a six-month pace, or CPI below −2.1%: inflation that is too low.

The score is the number of bars lit: 10 is healthiest and 1 is worst. The spark marks where it is today.

If this gauge had existed since 1960

Each month's score, with today's rules and thresholds and today's revised data (not what was known at the time). A month missing any of its three readings has no score: October 2025 has no CPI because of the government shutdown, and the 12-month change for October 2026 has no base. Before 1983 CPI measured homeownership with mortgage rates. Gray bands are recessions.

How it is calculated

The rules

  1. Two readings count: CPI (household budgets) and core PCE (the underlying trend), the latter over a year and at a six-month annualized pace. Each is rounded to one decimal, the figure shown, and loses a point for every threshold it crosses.
  2. Core PCE takes the worse of its two readings, both for the same month.
  3. The score is the worse of the two parts. High headline inflation or persistent underlying inflation is enough to block a good score.
  4. Everything else (other underlying measures, components, business prices and expectations) is shown but does not count.
  5. All three readings must be 75 days old or less from the end of their month. If one is missing, there is no current score: the last one is shown, with its month.

Deliberate choices

  • Normal is 2% on PCE, the Fed's target, and 2.4% on CPI, which usually runs about 0.4 pts higher.
  • Green requires CPI between 0.8% and 3.0%, core PCE between 1.3% and 2.5% and its six-month pace between 1.0% and 2.8%, all at once. Inflation that is too low also counts against.
  • Expectations do not count: a separate notice appears when they leave their usual range (Michigan 1-year above 3.4%, or the 5y5y outside 1.8–2.7%).
  • It describes inflation from the latest release. It does not forecast market prices and is not a buy or sell signal.
