Stock premium over bonds (ECY)

0.56 ptsOct 2026Score 4/10 · Alert

The stock earnings yield beats the real 10-year Treasury yield by 0.56 pts (median since 1881: 3.3): almost no cushion left.

The gap between the stock market's earnings yield and the real bond yield, according to Robert Shiller: 10-year average earnings divided by price (the inverse of the CAPE) minus the estimated real 10-year Treasury yield. It is not a guaranteed return: it is the cushion stocks offer over bonds. The lower it is, the less investors are paid for the risk. Its median since 1881 is 3.3 points; in 2000 it was negative. Shiller uses monthly average prices and his latest month is provisional.

There is complacency: the last month's median of Baa credit is 1.46 pts, among the lowest since 1990.

See scale and last 10 years

The other side of fear: when the last month's median of the VIX or of the credit spread is very low, hardly anyone is paying for protection and any scare catches the market off guard. It happened in 2006–2007 and in 2017, before the VIX spike of February 2018. Two readings; the worse one rules.

If this gauge had existed since 1990

Each month's score, with today's rules and thresholds and the month-end reading: a scare lasting a few days, like April 2025, may not show. Credit is measured since 1990 with Moody's Baa bonds; high-yield spreads only have three years on FRED and come in from 2023. Each Buffett quarter counts from its last month (it is an end-of-quarter level) and the latest months use the last published one, like today's score. These are revised data, not what was known at the time, and Shiller's ECY uses monthly average prices. Gray bands are recessions.

How it is calculated

The rules

  1. Each indicator scores 1 to 10 from its table.
  2. Two blocks: Fear (VIX, credit and financial conditions) and Euphoria (Buffett indicator, Shiller's ECY and complacency). Each block is the average of its indicators.
  3. The worse block rules: the score is that of the more worrying block, rounded (0.5 rounds down).
  4. Euphoria alone never takes the score below 4. Expensive, complacent stocks are a risk, not a panic: only fear takes it to 3, 2 or 1.
  5. Panic rules. If a fear indicator drops to 2 or 1 (VIX above 37, Baa credit above 4.75, high yield above 8 or NFCI above 0.75), the score is its score, not the block average.
  6. Fear rules. If credit or financial conditions drop to 4, or the VIX to 3 (above 30), the score is at most 4.
  7. An indicator without data is left out of the average.

Deliberate choices

  • It looks only at US markets and one question: fear or euphoria. Fed liquidity has its own tab (the same score as /net-liquidity), the rest of the world is in World, curves and the real yield in Money, and market inflation expectations in Prices.
  • Fear and euphoria do not cancel out: calm does not hide very expensive stocks, and cheap stocks do not hide panic. That is why the worse block rules, not the average of the two.
  • The VIX and credit have two sides: very high is fear; very low for a month is complacency, as in 2007 or 2017.
  • Credit is measured with Moody's Baa bonds against the 10-year Treasury, which FRED has since 1986. High-yield spreads, which FRED only has since 2023, are a second reading: the worse one rules.
  • The VIX in the fear block is taken as a 5-day median, so a single day of panic does not move the score.
  • It describes market conditions from the latest data. It does not forecast prices and is not a buy or sell signal.
